Making Money In Second Life
July 21st, 2010
In Second Life, Avatars need new hairstyles, new dresses for parties, new shoes for the ballrooms, suits for business meetings, watches, jewelry, houses, furniture for their houses, art to decorate the walls of their house, ponds for their landscaping.
They need virtual goods, virtual goods that cost real money.
In the last couple years, many of us have seen our real economy sink while Second life’s economy has thrived.
- $567 million U.S. dollars with user-to user transactions, a 65% jump from 2008
- $55 million U.S. dollars was cashed out by Second Life residents in 2009
- Over 50 businesses made more than $100,000 in 2009
Goods in Second Life are not bought with real money but with the in-game currency called Linden dollars. Second Life Lindens can then be traded on an exchange. Similar the real world Federal Reserve, the Second Life owners, Linden Lab, control the exchange. The exchange rate has remained relatively consistent at 230 Linden dollars for every U.S. dollars.
There will blogs to come about diversity of goods and services that are sold in Second Life for money. Meanwhile if you want some ideas on what you could possibly do to make a virtual living or want to discuss some ideas with residents so can do so by joining a Second Life forum. This is another place where residents with similar interests can gather and share SL secrets on how to be virtually successful.
